U.S. Ed Department increases oversight of how colleges work with outside companies
Last week the U.S. Department of Education issued new guidance on how federally-funded higher ed institutions (like most U.S. colleges and universities) are allowed to work with third-party service providers (like OPMs, but also most other Edtech services). This new guidance basically no longer allows these higher ed institutions to work with service providers that operate from outside the country and/or are owned by non-American citizens. This development could heavily affect all non-U.S.-based higher ed Edtech companies and might also trigger a policy change in Europe. You can find more in-depth breakdowns here: Matthew Tower, WhiteBoard Advisors and Phil Hill.
Co-Creation Hub’s Edtech accelerator puts $15M towards African startups
A new $15 million Edtech accelerator program to target Africa's $2 billion education market. Over the past few years, several Edtech startups like uLesson, Kidato or FoondaMate have developed digital platforms that have, in some way, seen thousands of Africans receive better learning and work opportunities. However, the whole continent is still largely underserved. Africa’s largest innovation hub Co-creation Hub (CcHUB) is now launching a $15 million accelerator program, dubbed The Edtech Fellowship Program, to back and support 72 startups across Nigeria and Kenya over the next three years.
